Research has shown that the more trauma a child experiences, the more likely that child will be to develop negative side effects later in life. Those effects include drug use, depression, alcoholism, missed work, and more. These outcomes can negatively affect not only the individual, but also the community around them.
A few ways we can be a trauma-informed community are to provide accessible resources to children, families, and providers on trauma and its effects, and to become actively involved in strengthening efforts to help children and families exposed to trauma.
2020: The Year of Healing is a year-long initiative developed by Muncie BY5 and Huffer Memorial Children’s Center aimed at educating child care providers on trauma. The monthly programs are designed to inform providers on not just the types of trauma children face, but also how to appropriately tailor care for children who have experienced those adverse situations.
