Tips for preventing premature births

November is Prematurity Awareness Month. Every year, about 400,000 babies are born premature—that is, they are born before completing 37-40 weeks of pregnancy. Read on to learn how mothers can make sure their baby has the best shot at a healthy infanthood.

Why is it important for babies to be born full-term?

The final weeks of pregnancy are very important for ensuring the full development of these young babies. Babies who are born before 37 weeks of pregnancy are at higher risk of health problems than babies who are born full-term.

What can we do to ensure babies are born full-term?

While it isn’t possible to always know why a baby is born premature, there are certain things expectant moms can do to ensure their baby arrives in the world happy, healthy, and full-term:

  1. Don’t smoke, drink, or abuse street or prescription drugs during pregnancy.

  2. Try to get to a healthy weight before getting pregnant. Once you become pregnant, try to only gain the recommended amount of weight.

  3. Get help for chronic conditions, such as diabetes and depression.

  4. Stay healthy—avoid infections by washing your hands and getting plenty of rest.

  5. After a baby is born, wait at least 18 months before getting pregnant again.
