About the Diaper Bank
of Delaware County
In January 2018, BY5 learned something startling: there are between 1,600-2,400 Delaware County low-income children in need of diapers at any given moment.
Diapering is a huge expense that places a huge amount of stress on a family. It not only eats up income—diapers can cost between $1,000-$1,500 a year depending on the age of a child--but can also hamper a family’s ability to earn additional income, helping to keep them trapped in poverty [SOURCE: ‘Diaper Need: A Change for Health’, Pediatric Nursing magazine.] This is compounded by the fact that diapers cannot be purchased by most benefits, such as WIC, SNAP, etc., which means that families struggling economically are unable to get diapers at affordable costs.
It's not just families who feel the effects of diaper stress: it also affects the economy. If parents cannot provide diapers for their children, they cannot enroll their child in child care. Without consistent child care, a parent cannot consistently attend a job, school, or participate in other community work.
That's why, in January 2018, BY5 launched the Diaper Bank Task Force--a group of local community members, professionals, and diaper bank representatives who came together to with the goal to support Delaware County families struggling with diaper need. The group's main focus has been on two areas: increasing the amount of free diapers available to families throughout the county, and supporting the diaper banks themselves in a way that forms a cohesive, county-wide network.
Triple the amount of free diapers distributed in Delaware County from 13,718 to 41,000+ from fall 2018 to fall 2019.
Establish 3-5 new diaper banks by the end of 2018.
Facilitate a cohesive communication system to aid inter-diaper-bank support and cross-referrals by the end of 2019.
Publicize the network to the public and raise awareness of diaper need in the community.
Help families gain access to educational materials about early childhood.
Obtain support and build relationships with local, state, and national organizations.
